Your Opinion Matters

I would LOVE to make some caramel apples-it would be a new adventure for me.

So I'm taking a poll...

*How do like your caramel apples- just caramel, or fun stuff added likes nuts and/or sprinkles? Maybe some chocolate drizzled on?
*What kind of apples do you think make the best caramel apples?

*Do you like homemade caramel or prefer to use the Kraft caramels?

When I make caramel apples I dip them in chocolate after the caramel dries. They are the best!

First, I LOVE, L.O.V.E. LOOOOVVVVEEE your blog header photo. So cool. I haven't been here for a long time (reading only in Google Reader) because of my fear of the scary photo.

Second, I prefer to dip slices in caramel rather than have a whole messy apple. (messes, ew) But I would not be opposed to a slice dipped in caramel dipped in chocolate.

My aunt told me how to make caramel in a can with sweetened condensed milk, but it's been so long since I've done it I don't remember all the details. I know it involves covering the can with water and simmering an unopened can for hours...YUMMY

I'll take mine with chocolate drizzled over top. :) hehe

I've seen them made with so much extras on top, I don't know how one would eat it. Such as marshmallows, nuts, etc. Too much for me, but they look pretty.

Either just caramel or maybe a little chocolate. No nuts. Kraft caramels all the way.

I'm with your pal who doesn't like the mess of an entire apple dipped in caramel. Slices dipped in caramel are not as fancy, but don't require a bath, either. And also .. she mentioned the sweetened condensed milk. I have turned that stuff into caramel by boiling an unopened can in water for .. it was either three or five hours. But we lived in a small house and after all of that boiling, our walls and windows were all dripping and it sort of felt jungly. Interesting experiment, though. :)

Jenny M, you make me laugh! I'm glad to have you back. :)

Kelly, I was hoping you'd see this, because I do remember you making those awesome apples.

Laurie, I know what you're saying. I think a lot of that is tooooo much, too. I don't want anyone to get TMJ problems trying to eat the things.

Kate, I like your thinking.

Steph, where do you buy a "large block" of caramel? I've never seen it that way!

Melissa, thanks for the condensed milk tip! Interesting! I'm not ready for that jungly feeling, either. Maybe I'll try in the dead of winter.

Kraft carmels, they are the best! Lots of unwrapping though, I tell the kids whoever unwraps the most get the first apple. :)
We also like them dipped in chopped peanuts, or with sprinkles - lightly sprinkled.
p.s. I've had Kelly's and Steph's, both different from each other but both VERY yummy! Use their ideas :)

i recently made caramel apples - the cheapy way. we used honey crisp apples - super sweet and i just bought the premade caramel that you pull over the top and heat to melt. it was really easy and tasted just as good.

I use the large blocks of caramel too - they are sold and cake and candy stores, but they are pricey. I have also purchased caramel from Gordons, it's good.

I'm glad I am not the only one of your readers who prefer slices dipped in caramel rather than a whole apple. I actually can't stand caramel apples. But, Gordon's does sell caramel that comes in a tray (you warm in the microwave) that will do about 6 apples.

They make Kraft caramel bits now. No unwrapping required. The trick is to not burn the caramel while heating it.

I do this alot. In the past I cut the apples into slices and layed them peel side up (it does't stick to the wet side) on a cutting board and drizzled away with caramel choc and nuts...no sprinkles thats just strange. HOWEVER once you cut open an apple it browns and THEN the next day it starts to weep and then you have a mess. SO what I would do is dip and let them cool and when you are all ready to eat then cut slices off the apple. ITs clean simple...oh but I did break a knife on a nutty one this week.

Another option is to buy the caramel they sell in the fruit deparment. I know its not THE BEST but its quick and easy. cut apple slices. Mix in some peanutbutter w/ the caramel and dip away. We frequently have this for lunch. : )

I love the apples you use to make sauce with!

Let us know what you do. I know nothing about making caramel.
